What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain
veneers, otherwise termed dental veneers or dental porcelain laminates,
are wafer-thin shells of porcelain that are bonded onto the front
side of teeth to create a cosmetic improvement for a tooth. Porcelain
veneers are routinely used by dentists as a way to make cosmetic changes
to teeth that are discolored, worn, chipped, or misaligned.
The porcelain veneer technique is a consequence of cosmetic dental
bonding. Dentists have had materials available that are capable
of creating a firm bond with tooth enamel. The porcelain veneer technique
utilizes the bonding capability of these materials to securely attach
a thin shell of porcelain (the porcelain veneer) to a tooth. Although
porcelain is essentially brittle, when it is securely bonded to a
sturdy substructure (a tooth) it becomes very strong and durable.
Porcelain veneers transmit light better thus giving a more translucent
and natural appearance and do not require the massive grinding of
tooth structure that dental crowns do.
Why should I choose porcelain veneers?
Porcelain
veneers are an excellent alternative to dental crowns
in many situations. They provide a much more conservative approach
to changing a tooth's color, size, or shape. Porcelain veneers can
mask undesirable defects, such as teeth stained by tetracycline, by
an injury, or as a result of a root-canal procedure, and are ideal
for masking discolored fillings in front teeth. Patients with gaps
between their front teeth or teeth that are chipped or worn may consider
porcelain veneers. Generally, porcelain veneers will last for many
years, and the technique has shown remarkable longevity when properly
performed.
