Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities using a variety of corrective devices. At Smilebuilderz we offer advanced orthodontic treatment under the direction of Dr. Nicolaescu, Dr. Faust and Dr. James.
Orthodontic problems, also referred to as malocclusion ("bad bite"), include missing, extra or crowded teeth and misaligned jaws. Most orthodontic problems are inherited. Some are due to an accident, thumb sucking or losing baby teeth late in a child's life.
Orthodontic treatment corrects the alignment of teeth, jaws and lips, and prevents physical health problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, bone destruction, chewing and digestive difficulties. Results also include a gorgeous smile and improved self-esteem.
When Should Orthodontic Treatment Begin?
The ideal age for starting orthodontic treatment ranges from three to twelve years of age. It is important that your Orthodontist evaluate your child at an early age. Orthodontic treatment of children will be shorter because dental braces can mold the bone around the teeth and jawbones as the child continues to grow. Orthodontic braces can also help to correct continued thumb and finger sucking or the use of a pacifier.
Adult orthodontics can correct gum disease and bone loss, which left untreated, will eventually lead to tooth loss. Orthodontic treatment in adults can also correct chewing and digestive difficulties. Sometimes orthodontic braces are used as the end treatment for TMJ in adults and children as well.
Orthodontic Interceptive Therapy
Interceptive therapy is treatment for children (usually ages 6-10) who are displaying developmental problems that need to be corrected to avoid future problems. Some common interceptive therapies include treatment of:
- congenital dental abnormalities such as missing, transposed or malformed teeth
- detrimental habits such as tongue thrust or thumb/finger sucking
- functional problems such as cross bites, deep bites and asymmetries
- space maintenance to create or hold space for a permanent tooth when the baby tooth is lost too early
FREE Orthodontic Consultation at smilebuilderz
What to expect from your orthodontic consultation:
Your first orthodontic consultation will likely involve a panoramic x-ray (an x-ray of your entire mouth). You will then meet with either Dr. Serban Nicolaescu, Dr. Shawn Faust or Dr. Jeremy Rich to discuss your orthodontic concerns and receive a thorough exam. They will let you know what treatment is recommended and what options are available.
Once all of your questions have been answered, we will determine if you or your child are ready to begin treatment. If so, the front desk will explain to you the fee structure as well as your insurance coverage and payment plan options. At smilebuilderz, we want you to be knowledgeable and comfortable with all our options.
Ceramic braces are made of composite materials, a high-tech glass-like product developed as a spin off by NASA. They are very strong yet considered more comfortable than metal braces and generally do not stain. Ceramic braces offer a more cosmetic alternative to conventional metal braces and are often popular with our adult patients.
smilebuilderz is the only orthodontic practice in the Lancaster area to offer Damon Braces, an innovative orthodontic system.
Conventional orthodontic treatment often requires removal of healthy teeth and/or the use of palatal expanders to make space. This approach is often uncomfortable, takes longer and can leave a narrower arch and a flat profile.
The Damon® System is a whole new way of treating patients. Designed to be discreet, comfortable and easy to keep clean without the elastic ties that attract and collect plaque, Damon braces make dental hygiene easy. Damon smiles are full, natural 10-tooth smiles achieved with Damon self-ligating braces that place light biologically sensible forces on teeth to straighten them. They are specifically designed to improve the overall facial result of each patient.
How Are Damon System Braces Different?
Damon braces are a new clinically proven treatment that aligns teeth and enhances facial aesthetics - usually without extractions or rapid palatal expanders. These passive self-ligating braces eliminate the need for elastic or metal "ties" and use light, high technology shape-memory wires that move teeth faster and require fewer adjustments. With Damon tie-less braces, patients can experience treatment without tightening.
Invisalign®, "invisible braces", are a great alternative for patients that don't like the idea of wearing traditional metal braces. A series of removable plastic trays that progressively align the teeth, Invisalign® braces are clear and most people won't even know you are wearing them! They also offer superior cosmetic and oral hygiene since you remove them to eat and brush your teeth.
To ensure the most precise outcome, our Orthodontic team of specialists will use computer imaging to create your Invisalign® aligners. After taking your bite impressions, he will use the Invisalign® 3-D computer imaging system to create a series of clear aligners – similar to a mouth guard. The first will fit your current configuration of teeth. Each successive aligner will act like invisible braces, using gentle pressure to move your teeth to their target alignments.
Frequently Asked Questions:
How long will the consultation take?
Approximately 50 minutes. This includes time to ask us questions and discuss financial arrangements with the front desk.
My child still has a lot of baby teeth. Isn't it too early to be seen by an orthodontist?
In addition to straightening teeth, our Orthodontists are trained to evaluate the growth and development of a child's face and dentition. We will review our findings with you and recommend treatment.
Am I too old for braces?
No one is "too old" for braces. Our Orthodontists have successfully treated patients of all ages! Treating adults can sometimes pose additional complications/limitations. An adult with a history of periodontal problems will require an exam and clearance by a periodontist.
Will anything hurt at the consultation?
No. The consultation will consist only of visual exam and possibly x-rays. There will be no treatment that day.
How soon can I start?
We can usually start a patient within 2-3 weeks.
The average treatment takes 24 months. The severity of the problem and general health of the teeth, gums and supporting bone will affect the length of treatment as will the patient's commitment to following instructions and general dental health care.
There are several types of orthodontic braces used to relocate teeth: Damon, ceramic, Invisalign (clear) and metal. After evaluating your needs, we will recommend which is best for you. Orthodontic braces are bonded to the teeth, with the exception of Invisalign, and wires are then threaded through them.
